Survey Closed

The survey is now officially closed. Thanks to everyone who helped to pass the word on!

Tomorrow, I will start work on the data, to isolate my interview candidates.

Update on the Survey

First of all, HUGE thanks to everyone who's passed the word on about my survey! I've had a fantastic response, and can now legitimately say that the study has enough data that I'll be able to work with it.

Because of that, the survey is officially going to close on Sunday, October 28th. This will let me have a stable and unchanging set of data to work with from that date forward, and make the interviewing process a bit easier to sort through. I anticipate being able to start contacting and scheduling potential interviews by November 1st.

For anyone new to this, I'm an undergraduate student at Western Washington University who is doing a senior thesis on social relationships online. My target group is fandom, because not only do I love fandom but it's a great group to look at for online friendships and acquaintanceships.

The first part of the study is a survey, which takes about 5-10 minutes to complete. Click here to take the survey. I am looking specifically for participants who are in fandom and who are over 18 (because of laws, not because I think fans under 18 don't have something worthwhile to say).

The second part of the study will be a series of online interviews. Just fill out the survey and the last question will ask you to leave contact information if you're interested in volunteering for that. Once I'm ready to start the interviewing process I'll contact the selected participants to confirm if they're still interested and discuss the details.

Help a scholar out?

I have enough data that I can draw some conclusions, but I'd love a bigger pool of responses. Help me out by spreading the word and linking back to this post or the survey, so I can get as many results in as possible before the survey closes.

Thank you so much for reading!

Survey is Now Closed

Call to arms!

My study will have two parts. The first of which is a survey, which takes most people ten minutes or less to complete.

Click here to take the survey. I am looking specifically for participants who are in fandom and who are over 18 (because of laws, not because I think fans under 18 don't have something worthwhile to say).

The second part of the study will be a series of online interviews. Just fill out the survey and the last question will ask you to leave contact information. Once I'm ready to start the interviewing process (no earlier than October 26th) I'll contact the selected participants to confirm if they're still interested and discuss the details.

Help a scholar out?

The biggest challenge for me, according to everyone, is going to be getting responses from people. I want to prove them wrong.

How can you help? Aside from taking the survey and possibly volunteering for the interviews, you can spread the word. I am not capable of contacting all of fandom by myself, I have to rely on people like you to help. Don't feel limited to just LJ and Dw either, I'd love to get news about this out to Tumblr, mailing lists, message boards...wherever fandom congregates, I'd love to reach them!

Thank you for your help!

I am not a hard core fan. I'm not someone who's ever engaged heavily in fandom kerfluffles or drama. I'm a lurker more than a participant.

But I love fandom. I love the passion, the meta, the humor and to some extent, even the kerfluffles and drama. I love the sense of community and support I keep finding in fandom.

So I want to study fandom, in a slightly different way than most studies I've seen. I'm not here to poke at fandom as something odd or strange or abnormal. I'm not here to dissect fandom, or lay its secrets out for other people to peruse. I have a hypothesis about social relationships online, and fandom is perfectly situated to help me test it.

I wish I could tell you more about my study, but I can't yet. I will do a post on my findings at the end, however. So if you're interested, just follow along.
